What are the initial challenges for the patients when they start using aligners?

Wearing aligners these days is the preferred option over traditional braces due to various reasons. Anyone wanting to correct their smile goes for aligners. Even though aligners might look invisible, it is not necessary that they feel invisible as they’re working hard to give you your best smile. It will take you some time to adjust as the teeth are not habitual to the aligners and would need some time to settle.

Some things that are likely to happen and change once you start wearing aligners are as follows:

1.    Sore feeling in the mouth

The aligners impose some pressure on the teeth to get them in the right shape. This could make you feel uncomfortable. Your teeth need some time to adjust to the aligners and because of this, your mouth feels sore. This is similar to when you start doing exercises. Initially, your body needs time to adjust and accustomed to the movements but once you get regular, the body also feels normal.

2.    Some edges will feel sharp

While you talk and chew, when your entire mouth goes through a movement, you might feel irritated as some edges of the aligners might be rough and would hurt you a little and will make you uncomfortable. But with time, this gets better. You might want to avoid talking for a few days since it would feel like a task to talk about. You might feel discomfort while eating solids. So foods like apples must be avoided in the initial week.

3.    Aligners don't fix like you expect them to

Even though we expect aligners to give us the perfect fit, it doesn't really happen. Sometimes they are loose and other times too tight. At times the positioning of the aligners also isn't too proper. If after wearing them for a long time, they start feeling loose in your mouth, it's actually a sign of progress.

4.    Attachments may be required

It's only after you start wearing aligners that your improvement is tracked and in extreme cases, you might be required to get some attachments to achieve your perfect and ideal smile. Attachments are not needed by everyone but those who have to wear them take a little longer in recovery.

Aligners surely serve the purpose of making your teeth look better and improving your dental health but it’s also important that you remember these things that happen in the initial stages of wearing aligners. Always make sure to consult your orthodontist before making a decision regarding your teet
